Alenka and Marijan have shared forty years together in their peaceful home on the edge of a forest. Once inseparable on the dance floor, they still find strength and joy in music and movement. Now in his eighties, Marijan remains active, while Alenka, seventeen years younger, suffers from Morquio syndrome—an incurable illness that slowly weakens her body. After years of surgeries and perseverance, Alenka’s condition worsens, and she decides to prepare documents for assisted suicide in Switzerland, hoping also to spark public debate on euthanasia in Slovenia. Four years later, unable to bear the pain, Alenka and Marijan leave their home hand in hand and travel to Switzerland.
Despite millennia of socio-philosophical debate, the dilemma about the right to die remains unresolved. In the film, I was interested in how this issue is resolved within the intimate relationship of a couple who, after nearly forty years of marriage, are facing the end of their journey together.
